Roof accessories such as ridges, ventilation, pointing, and sarking are essential components that enhance the functionality and longevity of a roof.

Ventilation helps regulate airflow in roofing space minimising radiant heat building up in the day while allowing it to escape in the evening. It allows a breeze to circulate for a cooler home and is an important aspect of the energy-efficient design.

Pointing, typically made of mortar, seals gaps and joints, reinforcing the roof’s protection against weather elements.

Sarking acts as an additional layer of insulation and moisture barrier, improving energy efficiency and safeguarding the building from potential leaks. Together, these accessories play a vital role in maintaining a durable and sustainable roofing system.

Ridges provide an effective seal between roof tiles, preventing water penetration and ensuring structural integrity.

Details
SA = Solar AbsorptanceRepresents the amount of solar energy absorbed by the roof. A value of 0 indicates that none of the solar radiation is absorbed, whilst a value of 1 indicates that a roof absorbs 100% of solar radiation.
E = EmittanceMaterial’s capacity to release absorbed energy, expressed as a ratio between 0 and 1. The higher the emittance, the lower the surface temperature is. Nearly all non-metallic surfaces have high thermal emittance that helps them cool down.
SRI = Solar Reflectance IndexA measure of the solar absorptance and emittance. The higher the SRI, the cooler the roof will be in the sun. The density of a LUTUM roof causes them to heat up more slowly during the day and return heat stored by them during the night. Roofs with the highest SRI values maintain the coolest roof.
BCA = Building Code of AustraliaBCA employed Solar Absorptance as a primary guide for colour classification, referred to as Light (L < 0.40), Medium (M < 0.60), and Dark (D > 0.60). BCA classification is correct at the time of writing but may be subject to change. Check your local state building regulations at the time of your project.
